Kasperské Hory is a small town in the Pilsen Region and a former medieval centre of the gold mining. It lies in the Sumava Range about 65 km (40 mi) to the south from the region capital of Pilsen and about 10 km south of the town Susice, on the upper reaches of the Otava river. Above the town there are the ruins of the Kasperk castle which was built in 14th century for the protection of mines. The development of the village (and later the town) was always related to gold mining in its vicinity. At the beginning of the 14th century the village grew quickly and it became a royal mining town.
The current population of Kasperske Hory counts almost 1600. Nowadays, it is a summer and winter holiday resort. In the center of the town square there is the dean's St. Margaret's Church which was built in 14th century. The Renaissance town hall (later reconstructed in the Baroque style) which was built in the western part of the square in 1579 is the dominant building of the town. Museum of Sumava provides historical and biological exhibitions of gold mining, glass-blowing, production of the safety matches, and natural beauties.
